WEO – PhDC03

Hydrological modeling

Course code: WEO – PhDC03

Credits points (ECTS): 3

Lecturer in charge: Dr. Nguyen Quoc Son

Description of the course:
This course carries 3 ECTS and consists of a description of hydrologic models, familiarization with modeling through practical work (implementation on a simple real case, results analyses, sensitivity studies to schemes and parameterizations, process studies, comparison with observations)

Objectives of the course:
This module will deal with a learning school of the SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model (http://swat.tamu.edu/), which is a large-used hydrological model that aims to simulate environmental scenarios contributing to the water cycle and matter fluxes at the scale of the watershed including diverse areas (rural, urban, hill, plain and floodplain). The study area will be the Red river basin.

Gradings:

 – Presentation 20%
 – Final exam 80%

Contents of the course:

  1. An overview of Hydrology processes
  2. Introduction to modeling in hydrology
  3. Ecological design principles
  4. Introduction to the SWAT model
  5. Modeling applications to a study case
  6. Personal/group presentations of the input/output data
